Person's Day

Did you know that Canada is celebrating Person’s Day today? Person’s Day celebrates the anniversary of the 1929 ruling that declared women to be “persons” in Canada.

Prior to the ruling, English common law declared that women were persons in matters of pains and penalties, but not persons in matters of rights and privileges. In 1929 five Alberta women led by Emily Murphy took the law to court to have it overturned. The government was so please with Mrs. Murphy’s actions that it took them 50 years to congratulate her for her outstanding service.
